Custom Program: Immersive Design

Assignment:

"Explore immersive design by creating spatial experiences that engage the senses and evoke emotion. This program focuses on using tools such as sound design, projection mapping, video, and light to transform spaces. Through experimentation with equipment and techniques, develop installations that highlight the potential of immersive storytelling and design."

This program focused on creating spatial experiences that engage the senses and evoke emotion. Throughout the program, we participated in various workshops and collaborative projects, often working in groups of four with peers from the same school but different disciplines.

While this page includes a report summarizing the workshops, the focus is on four selected projects that best demonstrate my work. The final project is highlighted first, showcasing the culmination of the skills and knowledge gained throughout the program.
Tasks for the Project:

- Experimenting with tools such as sound design, video mapping, and projection
- Developing immersive installations that transform physical spaces
- Exploring the use of light, visuals, and spatial design for storytelling
- Showcasing results through hands-on prototypes and design experiments

End Project: Escape Room Experience

For the final project, we were tasked with combining the techniques learned during the program to create a fully immersive experience. Working in a group of four, we designed a puzzle-based escape room concept with a crystal cave theme. The setup featured elements inspired by a pirate treasure hunt, with glowing crystals, hidden messages, and interactive challenges to uncover the “treasure.” Participants used a black light to reveal UV-reactive clues painted on the walls, while projected visuals and audio clues deepened the sense of immersion.

Due to scheduling conflicts, much of the work ended up being a two-person effort between me and Leon Westerveld

I mainly took charge of the decoration and the creation of audio and video assets for the project, while Leon focused mainly on the technical setup, ensuring the sensors and interactivity worked seamlessly. His expertise was crucial in holding the project together during challenging moments.

Although this project faced some hurdles, it demonstrated our ability to adapt and deliver a creative solution. Below, you’ll find images and videos showcasing the final immersive setup and highlights of my contributions to this collaborative effort.

Light & Glass Projection Experiment

As part of our exploration into immersive environments, we conducted a group experiment focused on projecting visuals onto glass surfaces. Using Resolume, we created light-based visuals and tested their effect in a dark room. The transparency and reflective qualities of the glass added unexpected depth and layering to the visuals, enhancing the immersive atmosphere. This project was a valuable exercise in understanding how materials interact with projection and light, and it helped me develop a more intuitive approach to spatial design and visual composition.
